ACADEMICS

NBCS students take part in structured classes designed to develop academic and critical thinking skills. Our goal is to instill self-discipline and feelings of self-worth in our students.

Required academic courses
Language arts (reading, writing, and oral communication)
Mathematics (basic mathematics through algebra and logic)
Social Studies (geography, history, sociology, and civics)
Science (basic, earth, physical and life sciences)
Physical Education
Spanish

We pay attention to students' understanding and communication skills in every subject.

Reading and Writing Skills
Four days a week, there is a 26-minute DEAR (Drop Everything and Read) period. On Fridays, it is a DEAW (Drop Everything and Write) period when students record their thoughts, dreams and fears in journals.
Students work on developing four writing styles: compare and contrast, expository, research, and short story. We expect them to have mastered each of these styles by the time they graduate 8th grade.

Technology
Laptops are provided for all of our 8th graders, thanks to a grant from the F.M. Kirby Foundation. Technology Concepts Group donated fifty used desktops to the school. A technology committee, made up of parents and staff, has raised awareness of our technology needs and brought in equipment worth thousands of dollars.
