A former auto showroom on Broad Street in downtown Newark is an unlikely place to find a school for fourth through eighth grade boys. Yet here our students learn to perform in concerts across this country and develop skills that enable more than 98% to graduate from high school.
NBCS graduates are accepted by the Northeast's top prep, parochial, and magnet high schools. After high school, more than 90% of our former students go on to college and many pursue graduate degrees.
Our goal at NBCS is to train young men to lead principled lives, enjoy learned and artistic pursuits, and contribute to their local communities.
We've been doing that for more than 40 years. In 1966, boys were recruited from public and parochial schools to sing in Tchaikovsky's Nutcracker, performed by the New Jersey Symphony and the Garden State Ballet. The chorus was well-received, but practice time cut into schoolwork. To give the boys an academic experience on par with their musical one, New Jersey Symphony board trustees helped create our school, which was officially named the Newark Boys Chorus School in 1972.
Today we are a fully accredited independent school with a staff of 15.
